Today Laura Miller‘s Raw. Vegan. Not Gross. (Flatiron Books) hits bookstores everywhere. I love this book not only because it’s full of amazing vegan recipes that I’m going to make all summer long and probably into the fall—things like Blackberry Chia Muffins, Watermelon Avocado Salad, and Spaghetti Squash Mac and Cheese, to name a few—but also because I art directed its interior design. That’s not something I get to do very often these days, so the fact that it was such a fun book and relevant to me (you can read about my veganism here) made it extra exciting.

Designer Nami Kurita worked with me to create a feel for the book that was vibrant and light. Both Laura’s writing and the recipes are a lot of fun, so the design needed to reflect that. Bright colors and negative space helped to achieve this from the opening endpapers forward.

The type built on what was established on Karen Horton‘s lovely cover—the title font is Bad Neighborhood from House Industries—and expanded to a very readable, very pleasant combination of Arnhem Pro for the text, Supria Sans for the headers, and Newslab Book for the recipes.

Overall, this book was a lot of fun to make, and it’s even more fun to read and work from. Even if you’re not vegan, I encourage you to pick up a copy and try out a few of the recipes.
